Leo and Zürich -- Leo e Zürich

Leo deserved that oscar for showing up at the ceremony with his Mom year after year. You are never too cool to hang out with your Mom. I had an interesting coffee morning today, one of those the expat-wives with nothing better to do are stereotyped for. These rendezvous are 90% chit-chat but one day you run into your soulmate, who has moved as much as you, who gets you as if she's known you for years, and it's immediate sisterhood.

Well, this morning there were some new people and the usual question went around like the plague: where are you from (contrary to our kids, who are born expats, we still like to ask such trivial questions when we meet someone new), how long have you been in Zürich and... do you like living here?

The answer to this last questions always very much depends on where the person is moving from, but generally the answer is always: oh yes! It's so safe, and clean, great to bring up the kids etc. BUT... there is often a BUT and it's generally linked to the fact that it's so safe and clean etc.

So today I have realised that Zürich is like the boyfriend your parents liked
The safe and a bit predictable option. Ungrateful bitch that I am. But really, we for example moved here from Tokyo. Admittedly EVERY place in the world is a bit boring after Tokyo. That vibe. That nightlife, day and night. It's got fire in its soul, the bastard we all fall in love with after ditching the safe option our parents approved of.

-------------------

Anti-ageing guitar -- La chitarra anti-invecchiamento

I think my guitar has magical powers, it spares me all that pedagogical crap, it's a fast-pass to my kids. I can wake up my girl singing Justin Bieber's Love Yourself and there you have it: the refresh button of our relationship. I have the music on whenever I can, it's my fuel.

When Bruno Mars' Unorthodox Jukebox came out, I was in the hospital for surgery. Still groggy from aesthetics I grabbed my earbuds and pressed play and WHOA! The infusion in my arm started bubbling from all the energy I suddenly had in me.
My  son, he likes alternative stuff, tonight I was playing Stressed Out by Twenty One Pilots, which is a true masterpiece. Unimpressed with my awesomely hip musical taste, he said: that's the kind of music people who have no friends listen to.

------------------------------------

I remember a long time ago as my kids were still in Kindergarten, a friend of mine who had a 16-year-old son told me he was going out to party and spending the night at some girl's whose parents were out of town. And remember asking her: "and what do you do in these cases?" as I still felt closer to BEING a teenager, than to parenting one.
"YOU STUFF HIS POCKETS WITH CONDOMS, THAT'S WHAT YOU DO".

Of course, unaware and naive as I was I thought she was crazy and that I'd grow my kids to be responsible and stay away from fire.

Fast forward a few years and it turns out that I am the one doing the stuffing now. And I understand now that my friend back then was an awesome Mom, not because of the condoms, but because of the fact that her kid had been open about his program for the night, and whoever is in the shaky phase of parenting teenagers knows that it's not virginity that's the holy grail of parenthood, but rather COMMUNICATION. And it's not because you are their friend, which I certainly am not, but because in some magic circumstances (which don't usually implicate eye-contact) kids feel safe enough to let you know a little tiny bit of their troubles without fearing the consequences or your reaction.

It turns out there is a lot of peer-pressure about being sexually active since you are about 15, I do not remember this happening back in my days. Or if some girlfriend was bragging about having done it, you could always get even by making up some bogus story with a Finnish tourist you met at the beach during the summer, nobody was going to check. But now the pressure is on on a more constant basis, movies like No Strings Attached or Friends With Benefits have promoted the myth of the FUCK BUDDY, so much for romance. So I told him: "Make sure that at least the first time you do it for love." I bought the thickest, safest condoms I could find (made from trucks' inner tube like parts of the Freitag bags), and hid them in one of his drawers with a trilingual poem.

--------------------------------------------------

"E in questi casi... cosa fai?"

after you drink or inhale (--> ti ammazzo)
if the girl is also drunk
can land you straight into jail

Spero tanto tu capisca
che va fatto per AMOR
e non soltanto perché
the girl is acting like a whore

Don't give into peer pressure
stand your ground and use your head
e non dovrai mai pentirti
anche quando sarai un vecét

Anche se gli ormoni
ti rendono un T-rex
sia chiaro come un neon:
NO CONDOM, NO SEX

Let it sit for 20 minutes before serving-Lasciar decantare per 20 minuti prima di servire

With so much to say I think I will just say nothing, uncork the mind and allow my thoughts to decant for a few minutes before serving, just like a bottle of good (Italian) wine.
Considering both kids are on school break, time has to be counted in dog years. It won't be a few minutes but a bit more.

--------------------------------------------------

The Birth Rectangle -- Il Rettangolo delle Nascite

There is one word which above all others immediately drains all the blood from my face: BIRTH CERTIFICATE. Each of the four members of our little travelling family is born in a different country, we are equally distributed with two on each side of the Atlantic, creating a kind of Birth Rectangle which overshadows by far the spooky reputation of the Bermuda Triangle. The girls being far more considerate chose to at least be born at driving distance, but the boys? Forget it.

Embassies cannot issue birth certificates, somehow international bureaucracy hasn't kept up with globalisation.
No, birth certificates need to be picked up personally in the municipality where the birth took place (with the exception of the US where they can be ordered online). What if the place happens to be 9.000 km away and you have no handy relatives living close by?
Blame your mother, she should have planned your birth better.
You'd think the embassy would mobilitate somebody in their corresponding county to pick up the damn document in your place, they could charge you a little less than the price of the intercontinental flight you'd otherwise need to get there, and everybody would just say: DEAL! They'd have their factotum hop on his Vespa/Chiva/Pick-up Truck or Tram depending on which one of our 4 countries of origin and voilà, done.
Turns out the embassy is mainly concerned with local matters, though I first felt it was an outstretched hand that had my back wherever I was. I have lost a bit of trust along the way.

In Tokyo one embassy employer had us wait for the 10 minutes we had gained arriving early to our appointment because he was playing solitaire on his computer. When he finally received us, we were immediately interrupted by another embassy officer and this is the memorable conversation that ensued between the two of them:

"So, shall we give this asshole his driver's license back?

"Who are you talking about?" (right hand with all fingers joined together pointing upwards and going up and down)
"Tancredi! That son  of a bitch!"
"Didn't he get his license suspended in Italy?"
"Ehhhh" (One hand up in the air as if signalling towing plane to come this way. Meaning: who the hell is ever going to find that out here in the land of the rising sun?)

Whenever in Tokyo, think twice before crossing the street, that son of a bitch is on the lose!

-------------------------------------
